The Brick Sentries  by Maryam Yahiaoui-Doktor (3/4/1995)

The great waves came crashing in, on the castle walls.

With the years of wear and tear, water seeped through from the sea

The repaired and re-repaired foundations shook

She, who lived and ruled there alone, worried

Long ago she’d ordered the thick walls to be built, but now they were giving

They had shook before, but she had them rebuilt, to experience no more hurt.

She had trusted them, they had worked

This latest storm was sudden, though.

Was it because she had peered over the top of the wall and wondered about the days without them?

The risk of it hadn’t came to her mind then

Oh, what was she to do?

It was best to just live as usual and hope for the best.

The storm picked up over night.

The sea hurled water up far beyond the castle walls.

On its way down, the flood washed away the ruins.

In the morning she woke up to fond the walls gone, with the calmest looking sea around it.

Her mind pointed to the ripples, panicking about pain

But her heart sat coolly in its realm and smiled at her man who wanted walls around his domain.

“No need! She shouted through life’s noises.”

A while ago my dream friend Maryam and I decided to form a collaboration with our *artistic* talents!! she is quite a sentimental poet and I am a humble illustrator. We have made a small book poetry on love and still haven’t had the chance to send it off to the infamously strict publishers around town. I know in my heart of hearts that this project will kick off some day (most probably when we tucked up enough courage to send it off).

To be honest I am quite happy with what we have came up with however it’s best if you could let us know what you think.

For more information on Maryam’s poetry and other writings please go to the link above and read her stuff under *Maya*.

In my next posts I will be up loading samples of our collaboration please watch this space.

Virtual Friendships

These days I spend a lot of time on the net reading the quite interesting Iranian blogs. Most of them are written in a very simple style almost as intimate as the way we write or speak to our close friends. After a while I feel like I know these people and count them as my friends. Have to admit that sometimes I get carried away and leave them a heartfelt comment. They never get back to me because they don’t know me!!! And they are used to/fed up with nonsense comments from strangers.I just caught myself thinking about these people and the one way relationship we are forming! These thoughts reminded me of my early teenage crushes on much older guys…and my desperation for their attention/affection.No doubt that these virtual friendships are as bizarre as those teenage crushes. But still they mean something to me…I really enjoy reading them. They make my day in the most strange way!!!

Several days ago I read a confession about a new found love on Mr. Neyestani’s blog (www.sainttouka.blogfa.com). There was a picture of his new beloved and I couldn’t help myself, had to make a sketch…she is so beautiful.
